Political maturity and social tolerance in South Africa have in the main triumphed over division and intolerance

Sir, Your report “We’re in the final days of white life in South Africa” (May 5) chronicles two cases of violent crime which are indeed deeply disturbing. Government has acknowledged the unacceptable levels of violent crime in the country and has embarked on a programme to systematically reduce crime and eradicate the socioeconomic conditions in which it thrives.
But to suggest that the Government is soft on crimes against farmers — or those who send ambiguous messages regarding such crimes — is neither fair nor correct.
In the wake of the killing of the rightwing leader Eugene Terreblanche, President Jacob Zuma called for calm and restraint from all sides and the ruling party took decisive steps to prevent its members singing songs from the liberation era which elevated the killing of white farmers to an act of resistance.
Julius Malema, the leader of the ruling African National Congress’s youth wing, who continued to sing the controversial songs, is facing charges before the ANC’s most senior disciplinary body.
The President has sent repeated messages of reassurance to the mainly Afrikaans-speaking farming community and has given an unequivocal assurance that there will be no Zimbabwe-style land grabs in South Africa.
White extremists represent a very small part of the South African community and criminals who break the law face the consequences under a vigorous and independent judicial system. As South Africans, we are the first to admit that bridging the racial and economic divides in our society was always going to be one of our biggest challenges.
A continuing study in South Africa released recently shows that social cohesion among South Africans is growing. There are increasing numbers of people identifying themselves as South Africans first — transcending racial or other identities. It also shows that 64 per cent of the population believe strongly that all are equal regardless of race, religion or political beliefs.
Like all other developing countries, we share the challenge of reducing inequality, underdevelopment and unemployment. But political maturity and social tolerance have in the main triumphed over division and intolerance.
As the country prepares to host the first Fifa World Cup in South Africa next month, we are confident that it will be a safe and secure event and that those who venture to South Africa will have a unique and unforgettable experience.
His Excellency Dr Zola Skweyiya
South African High Commissioner to the United Kingdom
