16 February 2010
A WOMAN and her five-month-old child were found hacked to death in an open veld near Benoni, Ekurhuleni, police said yesterday.
Captain Alfred Nakana said their bodies were found by children playing in the field in the Lindelani informal settlement on Sunday.
Police were searching for woman’s lover, he said.
“We suspect that the crime occurred on Saturday evening and we are afraid that maybe the boyfriend has already fled the country,” said Nakana.
• In Daveyton, Benoni, a man was arrested for robbing a 17- year-old pupil of a cellphone, Nakana said.
The youth shouted for help. Residents came to his assistance, found the robber hiding in nearby bushes, and beat him unconscious.
Police and an ambulance were called.
The robber was treated at the scene before being arrested. Police found the stolen cellphone hidden in his pants.
• Three men accused of trying to defraud a phone company out of more than R7million appeared briefly in the specialised commercial crimes Court in Pretoria yesterday, the SABC reported.
The suspects, Humphrey Mabunda, Hendrik Mabunda and Takalani Tshivango, are accused of using documentation bearing the South African National Defence Force logo to fake cellphone orders on behalf of the defence department.
The three men will file a bail application next week. The date of their next appearance was not known. – Sapa
