Susan Cilliers, Beeld

Johannesburg - The news channel eNews is to introduce an Afrikaans service, with the first bulletin set to air as early as June. Initial indications are that it might be broadcast on kykNET.

Bronwyn Keene-Young, eNews chief operating officer, told Beeld they were expanding their news services to languages other than English.

"We're now looking for a platform to broadcast an Afrikaans bulletin and such a platform doesn't necessarily have to be on our channels (e.tv and eNews).

"Afrikaans is doing well and Afrikaans speakers form an important segment of our audience."

Keene-Young added that the platform on which the Afrikaans eNews bulletin would be broadcast had not been confirmed yet.

Several jobs for Afrikaans-speaking broadcast journalists and camera people are being advertised on e.tv's website. They include four positions for Afrikaans bulletin writers with "excellent Afrikaans language skills".

'Not a done deal'

On Tuesday kykNET's chief executive, Karen Meiring, did not deny that the Afrikaans bulletins might be broadcast on kykNET, but warned that reports about news broadcasts on kykNET are "premature".

"It's not a done deal that it will happen."

"The details, such as the time slot and how often the bulletin will be broadcast, will depend on what's available on the chosen platform (channel)," Keene-Young said.

An informed source told Beeld that the Afrikaans bulletin would possibly be broadcast on kykNET at 19:00, and added that eNews is hoping to start these broadcasts as soon as June 1.

The source speculated that kykNET might be losing viewers, since they switch to SABC2 during this time slot to watch the news in Afrikaans.

SABC2 is the only SABC TV channel which broadcasts news in Afrikaans.
