  • 5-year-old dies after being shot

Christo van Staden, Volksblad

Reddersburg - Police had to barricade a road here on Monday so that an emergency helicopter could land to pick up a wounded 5-year-old boy and rush him to the Pelonomi Hospital in Bloemfontein.

The boy was shot in an accident on a farm in the area.

However, little Isaac Benjula died on Tuesday morning.

Isaac reportedly died after a 12-year-old boy shot him by accident. The boy was apparently loading a .22 rifle which he'd borrowed from his uncle to shoot pigeons, when the shot went off.

The bullet hit Isaac in the chest.

Jan Mngesa, Isaac's father, told Volksblad that he and his wife are extremely sad.

Not angry

"Our hearts are broken. Now we can't raise our child.

"We're not angry, but this thing is eating at us. A child shouldn't be allowed to play with a gun."

The owner of the farm, Gerrie van der Walt, was instructed by his legal representative not to speak to the media.

Police spokesperson Thandi Mbambo said Van der Walt, who was about a kilometre from the boys, was called to help.

"The farmer sped to the local clinic with the boy and his parents in the back of the vehicle."

At that stage the boy was stable but in a critical condition. While they were waiting for the helicopter, members of the community who had heard about the incident gathered at the clinic and the police station.

The 12-year-old and his family were also at the clinic.

Freedom songs

Freedom songs were sung. According to Mbambo, the community presumably thought there were political motives since it was a black child that had been injured.

Police first had to barricade the road so the helicopter could land to take Isaac to Pelonomi. The older boy's family left the clinic under police guard.

Mayor Zolile Matwa and the acting provincial chief detective, Jones Qhobosheane, calmed the heated emotions of the crowd.

"The case will be investigated according to the new Children's Act. Once the investigation has been completed, the docket will be referred to the directorate of public prosecutions for a ruling," Mbambo said.

Mbambo confirmed that the 12-year-old could not be arrested because of his age. He was placed under his parents' supervision.

Another docket was opened in accordance with the Firearms Act, due to the fact that a child under the age of 16 was allowed to handle a firearm without supervision, and because the firearm had not been secured.
