Residents shocked by attack on baby
Two people were arrested at the weekend for beating a one-year-old baby and a helper during a house robbery in Johannesburg, Gauteng police said on Sunday.
"I can't tell you if we are expecting to make any more arrests. We are letting the investigations continue and then we will see what comes out of it," Colonel Eugene Opperman told reporters on Sunday.
He could not say if a stolen laptop and modem was recovered.
"All we can say is that some stolen property was found."
The arrests were made in Alexandra on Saturday night.
The two suspects, aged 23 and 25, are due to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court on Monday, facing charges of attempted murder and robbery with aggravating circumstances.
The toddler was severely beaten, along with helper Francina Sekhu, at the house in a Randburg suburb on Thursday.
On Sunday, Liezel Furlong, spokesperson for the Sandton Medi-Clinic said the little girl remained in a serious but stable condition. It was unknown if she had regained consciousness.
Sekhu was being treated for serious head injuries. - Sapa
