CONCERNED: Cleo Bonny finds the R100 note he placed between the pages of a short story book in January still there. The book has apparently not been touched in four months. PHOTO: ANTONIO MUCHAVE

THE saying that if you want to hide something from a black man you should put it in a book proved true at a school in Soweto yesterday.

On January 18, self-proclaimed reading ambassador Cleo Bonny placed a R100 note between the pages of a book in the library at Beyers Naude Secondary School in Dube. Yesterday, he returned to the school and found that the book had not been opened. All the other books around it had also not been touched.

Bonny, 30, travels throughout the continent promoting the culture of reading among pupils. He teaches pupils fast reading, pronunciation, listening skills, spelling and the importance of class participation.

“I came to the school four months ago and the principal told me that if I wanted to hide something from a black man I should put it in a book, and I did not believe him,” said Bonny.

“Out of curiosity, I decided to sneak in while no one was around and put a R100 note in one of the books . On my return on Thursday, I found that the book had not been touched. I decided to leave the money there and came back today (yesterday) and removed my money.”

Elaine Ntlailane, an HOD at the school, said the reading culture was lacking. “The culture of reading should start at home while kids are young. ”
