Gauteng closes routes for taxis
Taxi violence not acceptable
Johannesburg - The Gauteng transport department on Tuesday withdrew a notice to close all routes operated by the Witwatersrand African Taxi Association (Wata) in Johannesburg, SABC news reported.
When the department issued the notice, it said it wanted to prevent violence erupting within the association.
The decision to close the routes was overruled by an urgent order from the South Gauteng High Court after Wata applied for an interdict.
The case was supposed to have been heard on Tuesday, but the department decided not to defend the matter and opted to withdraw the notice.
Department spokesperson Philemon Motshwaedi told the public broadcaster the department might issue another notice, but would afford all affected parties time to make representations.
