Johannesburg - A 19-year-old man was arrested for impersonating a police officer and trying to flag down a female driver, Johannesburg Metro Police said on Sunday.
Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said the man was travelling along the M1 highway, direction south, in a white Golf on Saturday night.
"He had blue strobe lights attached to the Golf, which patrolling metro police noticed were going off and on...they then noticed that he was trying to flag down a young female driver."
Minnaar said when police managed to stop the man, they found that he was also wearing a bulletproof vest.
"He could not explain what he was up to, or where he got the vest from. He was then arrested on the spot."
Minnaar said motorists should not stop unless they are sure that they were being stopped by a legitimate police officer.
"Look out for marked cars, proper police uniform and ask for identification.
"If you are not sure of the police officer then drive to your nearest police station and report the matter."
