Gautrain puts brakes on M&R

Johannesburg - Former SA Reserve Bank governor Tito Mboweni's appointment as AngloGold Ashanti's new chairperson was a reward for having protected the interests of "male white capital", the ANC Youth League said on Wednesday.

"Tito Mboweni's appointment into a mining corporation is not at all surprising and reflects the reactionary, nonsensical and backward views he expressed when he was the mis-Governor of the South African Reserve Bank that Mines will not be nationalised in South Africa," it said in a statement.

"There is no doubt that Tito Mboweni was speaking the views of white capitalists, like those who did in the recent past, which controls the South African economy... particularly the extraction, processing and trade of minerals."

Mboweni's appointment, or any other "amount of diversions - including by co-opted black reactionaries, would not deter the ANC Youth League from forging forward with the nationalisation of mines", it said.

"The nationalisation of mines is the key towards decisive and radical economic transformation which will benefit all South Africans, particularly the working class and the poor.

"That is why the national general council in September 2010, the national conference of the ANC in December 2012 will resolve on the nationalisation of mines. Enrichment of few individuals will never assist majority of our people (sic)," it said.

Mboweni's appointment takes effect from June 1 2010. He succeeds Russell Edey.

Mboweni has also been appointed as the chairperson of packaging group, Nampak. He succeeds outgoing chairperson Trevor Evans from June 1.

This is so funny. The Government cant even run Eskom or even municipalities under their control. How do they think they're going to manage mines? Is there actually someone with a thought process contributing to the ANCYL policies or are they content playing the role of mime artist dancing to the SACP's music box? Oscar nominations all round....

Imagine if the mines were nationilised. Not only would they be badly managaged but consider the safty aspect. The goveremnt is unable to maintain tar roads, how can we expect them to maintain mine shafts 1.5km under the surface

Can someone just shut up the child league. They want nationalisation of mines so that the minority of them can make quick millions, nationalisation of mines would not change the life of their "poor comrades" in any way whatsoever except when they then screw up the mining sector so bad, that it is beyond the point where it can be salvaged. Watch Animal Farm, Julius and his mates are the "pigs".. Excuse the pun

Government revenue from any enterprise should only come in the form of tax. Let Government focus on what they are supposed to do - look after the interests of the people. Get the very best skills in to run these state companies and just tax the hell out of them. Then the companies are run by the people best skilled to do so, and government still gets its pound of flesh.

Until the other government run companies can compare favourably in terms of production with private enterprise we shouldnt be looking at nationalising anything. Look at previous examples such as Telkom (which had a monopoly for years and failed to deliver a proper service), Eskom (their and governments great forsight and political buggering around placed us in our current position). When politicians are in charge of companies then political point scoring takes precedence to proper delivery.

On behalf of all South Africans, I want to extend a warm and sincere thanks to the ANCYL for single handeldly reviving a deadbeat industry in South Africa, preserving and creating jobs and increasing productivity. Especially since Julius has taken over, they have provided a steady stream of very high quality material for stand up commedians, cartoonists and satirists. Where would we have been without you - thanks, thanks and thanks again. Forever in your debt - Sam.
