A KwaZulu-Natal police constable appeared briefly in the Verulam Magistrate's Court on Tuesday on a charge of rape, said the Independent Complaints Directorate (ICD).
The constable was arrested earlier on Tuesday following investigations by the ICD, said its spokesperson Moses Dlamini.
The policeman allegedly abducted his ex-girlfriend after a funeral on July 3, and took her to the back room of a nearby tavern where he repeatedly raped her.
When she was freed, she went to the authorities.
Dlamini said the case was postponed to August 17 for a bail application. - Sapa
