Johannesburg - The SA Teachers' Democratic Trade Union resolved that it would defend the Congress of SA Trade Unions leader Zwelinzima Vavi, an official said on Saturday.

"In the meeting of Sadtu's National Executive Committee held in Benoni on Friday, the union further reiterated its support for Vavi who is facing disciplinary charges by the ANC for speaking out against corruption," union general secretary, Mugwena Maluleke said in a statement.

The disciplinary action, the union said was declaration of war against the working class.

"The workers of this country refuse to be intimidated by anyone and will fight back in order to teach those in the ANC who think they are father-organisation or father-members," the union said.

The union said it was committed to root out corruption.

It lambasted as cowards people who sent Vavi death threats, calling for them to show their faces.

"We warn these cowards to come out and face the workers and they shall meet their challenge."

It said Communications Minister Siphiwe Nyanda's declared war by threatening to sue Vavi if he did not publicly apologise for accusing him of corruption.

Vavi sparked furore when he complained that neither the president nor the Cabinet had said they would investigate newspaper reports alleging corruption among ministers.

After that public statement, Vavi was asked who he was referring to and he said Nyanda, who the Mail & Guardian had earlier reported had run up a R500 000 hotel bill because his official house wasn't ready, and Local Government Minister Sicelo Sicheka, who reportedly inflated his academic qualification.

This week Cosatu said it had been told that Vavi will face an ANC disciplinary inquiry over these comments.

Nyanda also appointed Edward Nathan Sonnenbergs legal firm to send Vavi a letter demanding a full apology and retraction by June 10.
