Secunda-Govan Mbheki Municipality has been boasting for the past two years with Secunda winning the cleanest town award. The current state of the town, however leaves residents and business owners wondering. The business area is flooded with all kinds of litter. Dustbins, if attached to their poles, are overflowing. The others are simply broken and are lying next to the poles. Some areas have refuse bags piled up in the gardens between shops. Bags that were in the gardens on tuesday were still there on saterday. in other places plastic bags were put in the gardens. The editorial team of the Echo/Ridge went through the business area last thursday and there were very few places where it looked as though you were indeed in the cleanest town. At some shops business owners and their staff have to clean the areas in front of their shops, otherwise it simply does not get done. A list of questions were sent to the municipality last wednesday. The questions were about a maintenance schedule and a plan of action from the municipality to bettrr the litter situation. Another question was if residents could expect a change of appearance of the town before the next cleanest town competition. Mr. Themba Motlhankana, acting marketing manager of the Govan Mbeki municipality, did not comment on the questions before the time of going to press.
